Mount Carmel High  School Graduate 1950

written by Tom Baumgartner

After graduation in 1950, I joined the US Navy Reserve and was called to active duty in 1951. I attended service school in San Diego, whereupon I was assigned to the USS Southerland (DDR 743) for several tours in Korean waters. I was released from active duty in October 1953. I married Nancy Eaton from St. Anselms & Bishop Conaty HS (Class of 1952) in November1955. We have 5 children (3 boys; 2 girls) and fourteen grandchildren (7 boys; 7 girls). I attended El Camino College and Loyola University part time while working for Chevron in a variety of marketing assignments. My last assignment for Chevron was at Headquarters in San Francisco. I retired in the fall of 1992 after over 41 years of service and returned to Southern California and settled in the city of Orange.

Current activities are trying to play golf, traveling and enjoying kids and grandkids. I was a member of the MCAF board from its inception until early in 2007.

My connection to Mt Carmel and the Carmelite priests and brothers dates from 1940 when my older brother Bruce, class of 1944, started at Mt Carmel. Both of my parents were very active in supporting the school from the beginning. Another brother, Jim followed me at Carmel and graduated in 1954.

Bruce passed away in January 1995 and Jim passed away in December 2006.
